I have been attending lots of band concerts/awards nights/etc and haven't taken one single picture of my kids doing this. But, I decided that do I really want to take a fuzzy, far away, hard to see picture where you are really seeing more of the music teacher's elbow than of my child playing their instrument? I decided that I would relax and just enjoy these things this time around and see how it went. So far - I'm enjoying it! I don't feel guilty for getting these pictures printed and never doing anything with them at all because they are really uninspiring either. I have the program from the event. I have a journal of what happened - I think I've found a great way of living!
Some (cameraless) highlights from the past couple of weeks...
National Junior Honor Society Induction - Caitlin - and a cool candlelighting ceremony. I decided from looking at the program, that you need to be named Caitlin or Hailey to be in this group - since most of the kids were! And to think I had never met anyone named Caitlin before I named my own child that!
Elementary Orchestra Concert - Well - you know - we've all been to them - it was an elementary band and orchestra concert. What made it really interesting was that Philip's teacher is out on maternity leave and while the long term sub is a really nice guy (and I think he must be only 12 years old or so - his name is CODY of all things! Wasn't it just a couple years ago that naming your child that was all the rage??? How old am I???) - I can hardly hear him when he is standing right next to me talking - so you can imagine what it was like at the concert - even though he had a microphone! I want to say "You work at an elementary school - speak up!!!). Philip did a wonderful job in spite of all of this.
Jr High Student Council Awards Night - Really for the 8th graders involved I decided after the fact. That's fine - they deserve it - and it does give all the 7th graders something to look forward to. And, they got to light more candles. ;) I think all these people are awfully trusting to place lit candles in the hands of 12-14 yr olds next to a fabric curtain in an auditorium. Caitlin and her cousin were complimented for getting along so well in class. It made me smile.
Jr High Band Concert - The last one of Caitlin's career I suppose. She decided that she's not taking band next year due to the man who took over her class in January. Very sad for everyone involved. I don't think he relates well to the jr high group and it's pretty much turned her off of band now. You have to be a really dedicated special person to do well with this age group - too bad I don't think he has it. Anyway - it was 3 bands and over in 45 min. Who knew it would be so quick? The bad thing about this whole event was that Caitlin's flute lost a spring a week ago and I had to get it fixed in time for this event. $50 later.... for a SPRING!!!! I am definately in the wrong business.
Thankfully, the school year is almost at a close and there shouldn't be the opportunity for any more out of focus/fuzzy/hard to see events. Oh - that's right - there aren't any pictures - but I'm sure you have what it looked like pictured perfectly in your mind!
